The Frog in the Well is a Chinese idiom or chéngyǔ. Chinese idioms are frequently used in Chinese language. They are usually consisted of four characters. Each idiom has a story that is based on folklore, a myth or a historical fact and demonstrates a moral teaching.
Irene Y. Tsai (author) and Pattie Caprio (illustrator) combine their talents to retell a story based on a Chinese idiom, The Frog in the Well. This old Chinese fable compares a frog who lives in a deep well to a sea turtle living in a vast Eastern ocean. The frog lives happily in the well. He thinks the well is the world until a sea turtle tells him about the vast ocean. Children will learn to read in English and Chinese simultaneously. This story is written in English, Traditional (with Zhu Yin Fu Hao) and Simplified Chinese (with Pinyin). By learning two languages, your children will be more prepared for the global market place. The Frog in the Well is translated from English to Chinese by Joyce Lin.
"The frog and the tutle immediately caught (my son's)interest and I am so pleased that we can interest him in the Chinese language." (her letter)

"Irene Tsai tells stories that speak to readers of all
ages. She has a unique ability to convey classic
Chinese stories by using language and tone that
children today can appreciate. She expands cultural boundaries and provides an avenue for nurturing your child’s emotional development.”

"What a delightful book! It has a meaningful message,
and the illustrations are charming! My father attempted
to teach me Chinese when I was a child. I would have loved this book! I know that The Frog in the Well will be enjoyed by aspiring language students, their parents, and teachers.”

"Irene Y. Tsai has achieved a vivacious story in the
telling of The Frog in the Well. This is a wonderful children’s story. Bilingual books are hard to write
but Ms. Tsai has succeeded in teaching me a new
culture in The Frog in the Well. The Chinese Idioms
were well explained in this book. Children will enjoy

"The fact that the book is bilingual is also a plus for children. They will have fun learning even just a little
bit of a new language. I’m sure that even parents will
try their hand at reading and sounding out the Chinese text."

"I really enjoyed reading your book. It is well written
and the full-page illustrations are colorful and lively.
The use of traditional and simplified Chinese
characters with Pinyin and Zhu Yin Fu Hao
make it accessible to both children and their parents
learning Chinese. The explanation of the meaning
of the Chinese idiom and the word list at the end of the
book adds much to the teaching value of this book.
I look forward to reading more books from CE Biligual

"Teachers can easily incorporate this wonderful book into their lesson plans. Children will have fun exploring the English to Chinese text simultaneously placed on each page. The publisher believes "The Frog in the Well" will help prepare children for the global market. This reviewer agrees. There are many book published in English/Spanish, however, as many years as I've been reviewing books, I've not seen a English/Chinese book for children." Read More.

"The Frog in the Well is both beautifully written and illustrated. The story of how the frog views his world will jump off the pages for children while educating them about Chinese culture and language. I have had an interest in China ever since a 4th-grade teacher opened my eyes to the country ... The Frog in the Well will create a spark for learning about China and the most spoken language in the world: Mandarin Chinese...” Read More.

"This book fills a huge void in the pool of bilingual reading materials. Not only is the story told in both Chinese and English, but the Chinese characters are accompanied by both Pinyin and Zhu Yin Fu Hao. With this unique and important feature, The Frog in the Well provides truly fabulous reading for beginning Chinese readers of all backgrounds.”

"The Frog in the Well" is a good book to read because if you want to try to start learning a new foreign language, it is also written in Chinese, not just English. I thought that it was really cool to actually read a book in Chinese. It was a little confusing because it was in a different language but once we started to read a little further I understood. "Introducing a child to stories like The Frog in the Well opens a whole new world to the young mind. It is a wonderful idea, both through storytelling and the accompanying artwork. Well done!”
Peggy Bancroft, Author and Editor, PA
"The storyline is easily understood, age appropriate, well-written and will stimulate young minds to consider the status of both the frog in the well and the turtle in the vast ocean when considering their own lives and the opportunities they have before them. There is an ocean of knowledge to investigate that is outside the confines and happiness found in a well if one chooses to listen to others and broaden his or her cultural experiences. We can all be embarrassed by what we think we know—just ask the frog in the well." Read More.
